The mailing list

If you join the mailing list, you give your email address on a sign-up page run by Brevo, a French company that sends the emails on my behalf. Brevo holds subscriber data in the European Union. Its own privacy notice covers its sign-up page.

I rely on your consent, which you give by confirming your subscription. Your address is used to send you the mailing list and for nothing else, and it is never sold or shared.

Every email carries an unsubscribe link, and using it stops the emails at once. Brevo keeps a record that you have unsubscribed, so that you are not mailed again by mistake. If you would rather your address were deleted entirely, ask.

If you write to me

If you email me, I receive your email address, your name if your mail program sends it, and whatever you write. I use them only to read and reply to your message. The lawful basis is legitimate interests: you wrote to me, and a reply is why.

Your email is held in my mailbox on the site’s UK server and on my own computer, and is not shared with anyone. I delete correspondence twelve months after the last message, unless it is part of something still ongoing.

Server logs

Like almost every website, this one runs on a server that records each request in a log: the IP address it came from, the time, the page asked for, and the description your browser gives of itself. The site is hosted by Namecheap on a server in the United Kingdom. The raw logs are discarded within about a day, once the server has processed them.

The hosting control panel compiles basic statistics from those logs, such as the number of visits and which pages were read, and these are kept for longer. They are for my eyes only, and nothing in them is used to identify or follow anyone.

I rely on a legitimate interest in keeping the site secure and working, and in knowing whether anyone is reading it.

Cookies and analytics

This site sets no cookies. There is no tracking, no advertising and no analytics beyond the server statistics described above, and every page loads from this site alone. There is nothing to accept or decline.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of the personal information I hold about you, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted. You can object to its use, and you can withdraw your consent to the mailing list at any time. I will reply within one month.

If you are unhappy with how your information has been handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
